What is a coregasm?

If you haven’t heard of this term, get ready, you are about to know what a coregasm is. If you have experienced this before, then you know what I am talking about and it’s time to learn a bit more about it. 

Let’s start with this “embarrassing” topic that not everybody talks about in the fitness community, but has been out there for years. Why don’t people talk more about this? I believe, it’s something that not many people is comfortable talking about, specially if you are a trainer and you are trying to explain it to your client. I am here to expose this topic, to show you that there is nothing embarrassing about it because it’s completely normal.

A coregasm is just an exercise-induced orgasm. It’s produced by the constant contraction of your pelvic and core muscles or by constant back and forth movements. Not everybody feel them and it’s way more common in women than men, but it can happen in men as well. It does not happen with every exercise though, it’s something that can happen with different exercises from individual to individual. A study from 2012 “Exercise can lead to female orgasm, sexual pleasure” by Indiana University School of Medicine, Debby Herbenick, J. Dennis Fortenberry, M.D, reveals that the abdominal exercises, specially the “captain’s chair” ab exercise was particularly associated with coregasms, including also other activities, between them: weight lifting, yoga, bicycling, running, and walking/hiking. The findings are published in a special issue of Sexual and Relationship Therapy. 

A coregasm happens mostly with core exercises but you could experience it with other type of exercises as you see. While training, you can push through the coregasm or you can simply avoid that specific exercise that leads you to having one. To avoid them, you could be more mindful when planning your training in terms of exercise selection, sets, reps and load. This can help tons in order to avoid having coreagasms while training. Having an orgasm when you are in the gym trying to workout, building a stronger body and while having a lot of people around you, can be a bit of a terrible and not so comfortable experience. 

There is little research done about this topic and I wish there is more in the future, so we can certantly know why some people experience it and why others don’t. I guess, it’s like everything in life, some people understand maths better than others, some people get their glutes activated easier than others, human individuality.
